I'm planning to buy two parakeets (budgies) some time....?
So I'm planning to buy two parakeets some time. I'm also planning on building an aviary for them. I know what materials I need, except for the size of the wire mesh. Is 1/2" safe? Or do I have to buy 1/4"? I'd also like to know a little about new parakeets.
1. I'd like to know how long I should wait to let them fly around?
2. How long until I can hold them?
3. Should I take them to the vet for a check up soon after I buy them?
4. How can I train them to hop onto my finger inside the cage to take them out?
5. Should I get a cuttlefish bone or a mineral block?
6. If I get a male and a female is it safe to assume I'll need a nesting box?
7. Should I repeat their names to them often?
8. Should I keep my cats in a separate room even when the birds are in their cage?
1) About a week or so is good. Let the bird get used to you and his new surroundings or he will get way to stressed out, which is very unhealthy.
2)Same time as letting him out, same reasons.
3)Take him right away, make sure there is nothing wrong with them. It's not a huge deal but its definitely nice to know that your bird is healthy.
4)make sure they are tame when you get them, let someone at the store hold them to see how they act then you should hold them. They may be really tame to the store worker because they are used to him but not nice to other people. Just put your finger lightly under the birds chest and it should learn eventually to step up. You can also say "step up" every time you do this until they learn to do it on command, Don't get your expectations too high though.
5)Yes. Cuttlebone, Calcium block, and they love those pink cuttle bone pirtches.
6)Don't get a nesting box. They wont lay unless the environment is safe. you do NOT want them to have babies until you've had them for a long time and you know what your doing and how to take care of the babies. If you dont have a nesting box, they wont lay eggs most likely. They arent like humans, they can decide if they want to have the eggs or not. If they really want them, they will lay them but dont encourage it.
7)Yes, say there names a lot, it can be comforting to hear the name a lot and especially your voice. Talk and whistle to them lots so they learn to love you.
8)Thats a good idea. It depends if the birds are high up though, or if the cage is near a table the cat can jump on. my cat was always scared of my lovebirds because they dive bombed her so she wasnt really a problem. It depends if the cats are younger though and if they jump around a lot. The birds should be where people are most often though so they dont get bored or lonely, even with eachother. So make sure the cats cannot get to them.
Dont forget to feed them their veggies 
(if the aviary is very safe dont worry about the cats. Make sure they cant break in, or the birds out though.)
