Fruit fly mating conditions?
I culture fruit flies for my pet dart frogs. I keep wingless melanogaster and flightless hydei. Both traits are recessive.
Recent cultures have had "fliers" in them. I know from fellow frog keepers this is not extremely unusual, however I've recently had several bad cultures at the same time as having flying fruit fly infestations in my vivariums. The "fliers" gather on the fine mesh lids of the cultures as if trying to mate.
I'm wondering if my recent string of bad luck may be the result of flighted flies mating with the mutants through the mesh. I use tops purchased through the same place I buy fresh cultures from. Do I need to worry about the possibility of wild fruit flies mating with my flightless ones through the mesh lids?
This is certainly possible, and might explain why you have had several bad batches. It isn't unusual to have a few fliers, but not a large number. If the problem persists, I would recommend contacting your supplier. They might know more about the problem, or be able to help you find a solution.
