How to get rid of a lice on a horse?
I Noticed today that my mare has lice, and I'm looking to remedy this right away, so I'm getting an Ivermectin Wormer asap but what are other natural remedy's for the ones in her mane and tail? Would a bath in tea tree oil have any effects? If you have anything that has worked for you please let me know asap. Thanks so much!
The first step you need to take is to isolate the infested horse. Don't use any brushes/blankets that you've used on the infested horse for any other horses, and wash and disinfect brushes after use. Also, if you keep her in a stall, clean out the bedding completely and re-bed.
Second step: De-worming. But, it depends on which species of lice you have. You said Ivermectin, but I recommend Quest. Moxidectins like Quest are more effective on external parasites.
Third step: Lots and lots of bathing. There are emulsifiable concentrates that you can use, I'm sure you can find one at your local feed store/farmer's co-op. There are also louse sprays you can use. After two weeks, you'll want to treat again to treat the lice that were not in an adult stage when you treated the first time.
As a side: It's extremely rare for a horse to have lice. They're generally only found on horses with poor nutrition, poor immunity, and overall poor health. I'm not implying that your horse is indeed in poor health, but you need to look into WHY your horse is infested otherwise you'll risk another infestation.
Edited to add: Most "natural" remedies are a sham, especially when it comes to killing and controlling a louse population. You'll be better off using chemicals, at least this once.
