What would happen if a professional pilot flew a standard Earth airplane on the moon?
What the gravitational effect be? For the sake of example, the pilot is flying a US fighter jet, anyone you like. Not based on combustion, but solely on gravity, would the differences be? I realize that the lack of oxygen would not allow the plane to fly properly, but if it could...
Let's say, for the sake of a discussion, that you could build a humongous room (a really, really big cave, for example) and fill it with air at the same pressure as what we have at some altitude where the jet flies comfortably.
Then the jet would be able to fly at its normal speed (until it reaches the end of the cave, of course).
The lift of the wings depends on the speed at which the air passes above and below the wing surfaces. The lift (pounds per square inch) would be the same as what the jet gets on Earth.
On Earth, if the pilot sets the wing configuration, controls and engine power for level flight, then the lift from the wings is exactly equal to the weight of the jet... on Earth.
["weight" is the force with which Earth pulls the plane down, "lift" is the force with which the wings pull the plane up -- if they are balanced, the plane goes neither up nor down]
If he uses the same settings while flying in your gigantic lunar cave, he will get the same lift. HOWEVER, the plane weighs only 1/6 of its Earth weight. Therefore, the plane would "crash" on the ceiling of the cave.
You would need to lower one of the properties (or make the weight bigger). For example, the same plane, with the same engine, could fly with much smaller wings.
Or the same jet, with the same wings, could still fly with a much smaller engine.
And so on.
---
Let's use a rough estimate of 30,000 pounds as the Earth weight of the fighter jet (the max. take-off weight of most F-16 is around 37,500 lbs).
This means that under "level flight controls", the wings generate 30,000 pounds of lift.
On the Moon, the 30,000 pound jet would now weigh only 5,000 pounds. This means an excess of lift of 25,000 pounds.
The mass of the jet would be roughly 930 slugs (same as it is on Earth)
F = m a
25,000 pounds = 930 slugs * acceleration
a = 26.88 ft/s^2
The plane would be accelerating towards the ceiling at a vertical rate of almost 27 ft per second, per second.
Here is the tricky part. The pilot would normally feel his weight to be 1/6 of his normal [Earth] weight. If the plane is accelerating upwards at 27 ft/s^2, this is 5/6 of Earth's gravity. Added to the 1/6 he already feels by being on the Moon, the pilot would feel the same as if he were on a level flight on Earth.
Unless he had trained on the Moon, he would not recognized that he is accelerating upwards -- his senses would fool him into thinking that he is flying level.
Also, if the first instrument he looks at is the vertical accelerometer, and if the accelerometer was not reset for use on the Moon, then it too would fool him into thinking that he is flying level.
The only warning he might get would be from an "altitude" radar looking UP (which they normally don't have), warning him about getting too close to a cave ceiling. [Definitely not part of the specs for Earth jet fighters]
