PLEASE HELP WITH MY HORSE!!!!?
i have a horse she is a five yr old Thoroughbred and very green in the training. she doesn't stop as quickly and her neck is a bit stiff so she doesn't turn as Quickly. also she frights at things that she just notices or makes noise ( such as rustling or plastic bags) out of nowhere. she also doesn't like anything over her head. when i tie her up at the tacking shed, she doesn't like the swinging door, so when i open it i have to be careful, or she will pull non stop until she is free, most of the time breaking the lead rope. she is a great friendly horse and the farrier tells me that she is verry quiet for a cheastnut throughbred, and she is, just she has a few problems and habbits i want to breack her out of. thankyou for your help
It does sound as though she were beaten or traumatized while being tied or closed in a barn. If she's stiff on one side, have someone you trust try the same turn with her. If she turns ok, it's you. If not, slow, careful work is needed.
Ask your Vet: does he notice any vision problems on that side?
I had a 4 year old thoroughbred filly named Catch Up If You Can (let her get loose- the Man O' War ancestry showed). She had been abused by a bad farrier, an idiot strapped a saddle too tight to her as a 2 year old and turned the terrified girl out into an area where she fought until she nearly killed herself, and as a yearling she opened her chest to the breastbone on a barbed wire fence. The fire ants had blinded her in one eye. No joke.
It took a year just to pick her feet up and get her to trust me to the point where I could just drop the lead on the ground to brush her. She got to the point I could put my hat over her blind side and lead her from that side with no problems.
When I put a saddle on her, she didn't try to fight it. She squealed a little and trusted me. When I mounted, she didn't buck at all. She and I jumped and excelled at dressage- the judges never found out she was blind in one eye. Ever.
Give your friend all the time she needs. Don't tie her at the tacking shed, hold the lead and talk to her while someone else slowly moves the door. Keep her attention on you. If it doesn't work the first time, ok. No matter what happens, keep your voice and body language low and even, steady and confident. DO NOT PANIC! She'll take her cue from you. Take a lot of long walks with her and talk to her. Brush, treats, feel-good scratches. This is dangerous, so be careful. Eventually she'll trust you no matter what is going on. You can't teach her to trust or train her to trust- it'll come from your heart to hers.
It takes time. Give both of you the time you need.
