Are ear bonnets suitable for fly protection when horse is turned out in pasture?
I was debating buying a Fly Mask with the mesh ears because recently there has been a gnat hatching and they are swarming in my horse's ears!
But I I feel in the hot humid summer all that plastic from the Fly Mask would be hot on his face. I would be annoyed if I was the horse wearing it haah!
So ear bonnets/fly veils/ear nets, (those crochet things) would be a cooler way to keep bugs out of my horse's ears without wrapping up his entire face. He could see better as well.
***I am talking about the ear nets that have throat latches so they don't slip, twist or fall off***
What do you guys think? Would it be alright to use for turnout? My horse is only going out with one other horse, he won't be bamboozled with nippy friends 
No, they are not. Most of them will not break if they get caught on something, and your horse could get into a very dangerous situation quickly. A mesh mask provides plenty of ventilation; my horses wear them for months, and they are never uncomfortable. I recommend the Farnam Supermask.
EDIT: All fly masks allow for very good vision. Bonnets are made for use while riding, not for turnout.
