Trying to figure out why this goat is unhealthy?
I have a nigerian dwarf goat and I do know whats wrong with her. She's been losing a lot of weight lately. We took her to a vet and had her get new shots and she was wormed. She didn't gain any more weight. So we took her to a different vet and they took a stool sample and did a blood test. The blood test showed that she had no health problems and the other test told us she still had worms...after being wormed only a month ago. We bought Zimectrin gold (horse wormer) and wormed her again but she only ate about half of what she was suppose too...I'd imagine it doesn't taste that great. How long do I have to wait to try to worm her again? Can I do it right away?
Tori,
Worms are the #1 killer of goats.
What was she wormed with the first time? I have never used zimectrin. Worm her with ivermectin.
Sock that food to her, keep her eating. Get some nutri drench, or order some goat-ade. Give her shots of vit. B.
Honestly, if she is losing weight, she will soon become weak, and eventually die, so at this point, I say, throw everything but the kitchen sink.
I recently took back a 4 year old nubian doe. She had the most horrible case of worms and cocci I had ever seen. It took me almost 2 weeks to get her back to normal, 10 days of not eating. It was HORRIBLE.
What have you been worming with? Ivermectin seems to be pretty good right now. Make sure you give her enough too.. When using the Horse Paste, (when I use ivermectin i get the apple flavored gel), if the goat weighs 50 pounds, I dose her for 100 pouds. if she weighs 200 pounds, she gets enough to worm 300 pounds. Remember, those are designed to worm a horse, with a single chamber stomach. You cannot hurt a goat with ivermectin, safeguard, or strongid.
if she only got half of it, you need to open her mouth, shove the tube in, and make sure she gets the rest of what she needs! Its tough to do, but must be done. I hate medicating a sick animal. I had a Nubian doe, throw her head against the side of the trailer (where she was in, for isolation purposes) and scream bloody murder, I cried. I felt so bad for her, but you know what, I pushed on, and gave her everything I had, and kept her on I.V fluids, and she pulled through!
Please let me know how she does. and if you have any other questions.

I apologize, i must admit, i was in a rather poor mood.
I can see why you would add this, I am now going to delete my ignorant response:)
and I have a grandson of BoPeep. I can see why you would put what you did put.
I have heard the same for alfalfa, but raising nubians, they seem to only thrive on a high quality alfalfa, and my mentor, has fed her nubians this way for over 30 years.
Again I am sorry, we are working for one goal, improving goats and the way they are cared for.
As far as the overeating. no, I mean you do give a shot when they show symptoms of the disease, but the vaccine is called CD/T tetanus toxoid, (clostridium, perfringes types C&D) which are the most common, this is given once, then in 4 weeks, then a yearly booster, also given one month before kidding to help protect kids against it. The cure for overeating disease (aka enterotoxemia) is a large dose of C&D Antitoxin, you double the dosage listed for sheep if your animal is displaying symptoms. I always have this on hand, its a life saver.
