First time since I have?
So the time has come to deworm Shasta. This is the first time I have had to do it since I bought her so I dont want to mess up!
The first time she got dewormed my trainer did it when I wasnt there. And I know u have to alternate wormers... is it bad that I dont know which one she used? will it matter? ( we dont board with her anymore.. so cant ask)...
in personal preference which are the best wormers? i heard quest is really good. also bimectin?
i do know how to give her the wormer but how much do i give her? i know u have to go by their weight... but i dont know how much she weighs, nor do i have a weight tape...
There's actually no proof that alternating de-wormers has any effect on the pathogenesis of worms. I know for a fact that it has zero effect in cattle, but no formal studies have been done with horses. It won't matter if you do or don't - it won't harm your horse. The reason people say you should alternate is because of a buildup of resistance in worms.
As for what works the best, a macrocylic lactone (avermectins and milbemycins) is your best bet - specifically a moxidectin (like Quest). We did a study using Ivermectin and Quest. With Ivermectin, the horse, at 50 days, had just as many eggs as when it was de-wormed the first time; moxidectin stayed in the system for 150 days, and the number of eggs was not significant enough to de-worm the horse again.
Don't use anything with a Fenbendazole - it hasn't been effective in 15 years. And never, ever, ever use anything with Levamisole; it's very toxic.
I could get more technical because I love talking about parasites, but I feel that would just annoy you! I hope that helped a little bit.
